Roles and Responsibilities of CYO Athletics Staff

Contact Tauno Latvala regarding:

  • Incident Reports – Submit through parish/school athletic director. Click here for online form.
  • Special requests not known at the time of team registration - Tauno will contact and work with the appropriate sport commission and/or the Athletic Advisory Committee when reviewing special requests not included on the team registration.
  • New parishes or schools seeking membership in CYO Athletics.

Tauno will contact the following consultative groups regarding the listed tasks:

  • Athletic Advisory Committee – regarding citation appeals, recommendations and approval of strategic vision of CYO Athletics, decisions with outcomes applicable to multiple sports.
  • Sport Commissions – regarding special requests, eligibility, appeals, lopsided scores, playoffs/championships oversight, coaches meetings, and incident reports (as appropriate).
  • Parish/school athletic directors – incident report follow-ups.

Contact Ross Brownell regarding:

  • Scheduling – re-scheduling, scheduling TBA’s, scheduling rainouts. Ross is the staff member responsible for communications with officials associations to get referees for games, and securing fields and gyms for games.
  • Team Registration – Parish/school athletic directors submit team registrations to Ross, including on that form all special requests to schedule around parish or school conflicts, TBA’s, and player eligibility requests. Ross will send special requests to Tauno to follow up with the appropriate commission.
  • Score Reporting – Ross will record all scores into the League Standings, and will send lopsided scores to Tauno and the appropriate sport commission for follow-up.
  • Facilities – questions around fields, gyms and other facilities used in CYO Athletics. Ross also receives Field and Gym Request Forms from the parish/school athletic directors for scheduling purposes.
  • Financials – check processing. All team registration fees should be sent to Ross.

CYO Athletics Advisory Committee

The Athletics Advisory Committee (AAC) is a consultative body made up of head commissioners of each youth sport and at-large members whose primary function is to work in conjunction with the staff of CYO Athletics to develop its strategic vision.  As is necessary, they also make decisions on appeals from athletic directors of rulings by the staff of CYO Athletics or a sports commission.  Appeals may be made to the AAC in regards to special requests, eligibility requests, suspensions and policy exceptions.

COMMISSIONS

It is the joint responsibility of the Director of CYO Athletics and existing commission members to recruit and select new members.

The commission for each sport will be responsible for:

  • The rules and decisions on rule changes in keeping with the overall policy of CYO Athletics.
  • Assisting in scheduling league and tournament games.
  • On-site observations to ensure games are played within the framework of the philosophy of CYO Athletics and to enforce the unsportsmanlike conduct and playing time rules, as well as the code of conduct.
  • Conducting the preseason coaches meeting.
  • Organizing and conducting technical clinics for coaches.
  • Ruling on all properly submitted protests and eligibility requests.
  • Determining appropriate disciplinary action for all rule violations.
  • Ruling on all matters not specifically treated above.

 

NOTE: Decisions of a commission will be reviewed by the Director of CYO Athletics. If a problem is perceived, there will be a meeting with the commission to discuss the issue. The matter will be reconsidered and another vote taken. Neither the commission nor the Director of CYO Athletics has the power to overrule the other. In the unlikely event of an impasse, the matter will be brought to the CYO Athletics Advisory Committee.
