Youth and Family Camping : Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CYO philosophy?
Each CYO summer camp session becomes a vibrant, Catholic faith community which offers youth a fun-filled, challenging week in a safe natural setting.  Campers discover a sense of self, and appreciation of others and nature, and see all these wonders as a reflection of God, our Creator.

CYO camps are open to people of all races, religions and creeds.  Our camps welcome everyone and respect each individual’s personal beliefs.  In fact, understanding our differences makes the world a better place.

Who are the Camp Directors?
CYO Camp Directors are selected for their experience in summer camping and commitment to youth development.  All of our Directors possess the minimum of a bachelor’s degree, have completed various in-service tranings on topics related to youth and camping, and have served in a variety of roles at camp before assuming the responsibility of Camp Director.  Please see our staff page to learn more.

How are counselors selected and what training do they receive?
We seek enthusiastic, caring and creative counselors who have a “camper first” attitude.  CYO staff are carefully selected and screened through interviews, references and background checks.  Counselors receive a nine-day staff training in safety, emergency procedures, behavior management, and child abuse prevention to name just a few of the topics. Staff are evaluated throughout the summer and receive coaching from experienced supervisors to help them best serve your child.

Is CYO accredited by the American Camp Association?
Yes!  It means that we adhere to more than 300 industry standards–everything from how we store our chemicals to staff screening.

Is financial aid available for campers?
Yes.  CYO is committed to helping make it possible for every young person to attend camp regardless of their financial situation.  All families are encouraged to apply if help is needed.  Varying amounts of aid are offered depending on need.  The maximum scholarship available is $300 per camper.  If requesting financial aid, be sure to complete that section on the registration form.  A $25 non-refundable deposit is required.

May I visit camp before my child attends?
Camp Don Bosco and Camp Hamilton offer an open house before each summer season.  For more information please contact the office.  For parents privately transporting their children to camp, tours will only be offered on the final day of each session.

What if my camper loses something while at camp?
To assure the return of lost clothing and equipment, items should be clearly marked with camper’s name.  You can arrange to pick up your lost and found items by calling the CYO office at (206) 903-4625; they will not be mailed to you.  Lost and found items will be kept until early September.  Clothing and equipment not claimed by this date will be donated to a charitable organization.  CYO does not assume responsibility for lost items.

Can I send mail to my campers while they are at camp?
Campers can send and receive letters, so be sure to pack stamps, envelopes, stationary or post cards. We suggest letters to campers to be sent before the camper leaves for camp or within the first two days of the session (except mini camp) to ensure they are received. Packages can be sent to camp. However, CYO cannot guarantee packages will make it to your child on time.  Care packages should not exceed the size of a shoebox and PLEASE DO NOT SEND any items with peanut butter or nuts.  CYO does not assume responsibility for lost items.  Letters and packages to campers can be mailed to the following address:

What if my child is homesick?
Experiencing homesickness is not uncommon at camp, regardless of age or gender.  Parents will be informed by the camp director if their child is suffering from extreme homesickness.  However, most instances of homesickness are isolated to bedtime.  Our staff work with the camper to help him/her feel safe at camp and the homesickness cures iteslf.  Parents can help by writing appropriate letters.

  • Do tell your child that you love them.
  • Do ask a lot of questions about what they are doing at camp.
  • Do reassure your child that you will pick them up on the last day of camp.
  • Do NOT make reference to how much you miss your child, how much fun you are having while they are away or that your child’s pet is lonely without them.
  • Do NOT tell your child to call home if they are homesick.  Campers do not have access to a phone.
