Welcome!
We invite you to visit us in the Campus Ministry office. We provide coffee and snacks free of charge, pop and bottled water for a quarter. We are in Old Main Room 201-E, a room used as office space for Nick and Peer Ministers, and 201-F, the main room with a visiting and snack area, resource library, and entrance to Susan’s office. University chaplain Fr. Benedict is often in the office to discuss religion and spirituality, but more often just to give visitors a hard time!

Mission Statement
“Campus Ministry provides a Christian environment in which students and employees, regardless of religious persuasion, are assured respect and freedom to pursue personal spiritual growth. Campus Ministry is greatly influenced by the century- old traditions, customs and spirit of Catholic Benedictine monasticism. One of those traditions is hospitality. The office supports all students and reinforces their integration into their spiritual community through liturgies, education, social justice programs, retreats, prayer groups, cultural trips, and discussions. These programs are intended to assist students and employees in blending their faith into their daily lives.”

Our Pledge
Today, we pledge to shape a new vision of ministry on our campus. We commit ourselves to forming vibrant faith communities devoted to bringing the light of the Gospel to the academic world. We promise to implement our projects to the best of our ability and to attend to the needs of our team and the community we serve with faithfulness. We endeavor to be seen as servant leaders guided by the Gospel and vision of the Spirit as described in Sons and Daughters of the Light, “A Pastoral Plan for Ministry with Young Adults”, (National Council of Catholic Bishop’s document on young adult ministry). Finally, we call upon the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to help us grow in faith as we continue to bring together the message of Jesus Christ and higher education for the well-being of the whole human family.

A little bit about us …

Catholic Campus Ministry is a student-led organization working to promote spiritual growth and faith on the UPS campus. Students gather weekly to share, laugh, and pray. We coordinate opportunities for students to attend the local churches and we occasionally provide worship services on campus. Each year, we organize retreats, service opportunities, soup and bread dinners during Lent, and a Stations of the Cross service on Good Friday. The Newman Center at the University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University also invites UPS students to take part in their retreats and activities. Catholics and non-Catholics alike are encouraged to join Catholic Campus Ministry in our exploration and investigation of the Catholic faith.

The University of Washington Newman Center is the Catholic Church for the University community. The parish is largely made up of students looking to participate actively in their Catholic faith and to grow spiritually in a community with others of similar faith backgrounds. Although most of the members of our community are UW students and people who live in the University District, all are welcome to our community.

Mass is celebrated our our center daily (except Saturdays). In addition to celebrating the Mass, the Newman Center sponsors many activities such as Bible studies, guest speakers, community service and, of course, social events!

Our Mission
We believe that Jesus has called each of us by name to be Church, the gathering of the People of God. We believe that Jesus calls us to be in community as this Church, the Prince of Peace Newman Center at the University of Washington.

Above all, we want our community to be a place of welcome: to be a place of welcome and joy as we worship together, caring for all those who come here, to be a place of welcome and resource for those seeking to learn about scripture, sacraments and the Catholic tradition, to be a place of welcome, hope and solace for those in need, both within our own community and in the world. We know that our God is not only discovered here but beyond these walls in other peoples and communities. We therefore also welcome those who are not members of the Catholic tradition to join with us in those events–worship and social–to the extent they feel called by the Spirit.

As a Newman Center, our special outreach and the reason we are formed is to share the Good News with the University community: students, faculty and staff, but we also welcome those not associated with the University in a formal way, to join us in this task of realizing the Incarnation on this campus.

Jesus has called us by name and made us welcome. We, the community of the UW Newman Center now extend this welcome to all who enter and invite you to join us in making this house a true place of peace.
